All returning BHS students should be encouraged by each teacher and staff member
to
read
during the summer. Suggested books are listed on the school’s Reading Web Page.
Student Incentives
On the first day of school in August, students who read one or more books during the summer will be asked to complete a form with the title and author and a brief comment about each book. The form will also have the honor pledge which must be signed by the student. All students who complete a sheet will receive a reward. (These individual rewards will be determined by the number of students completing the form and funds available.)
- In addition to providing recognition to each student who completes a form, the names of all participating students will be eligible for drawings throughout first semester. Students whose names are drawn will receive a special prize. When the winning student’s name is called, the name of the book and a comment about it will be announced.
- Rewards will be given to the class (freshmen, sophomores, juniors, seniors) that has the highest percentage of students participating in the reading program.
To reinforce the significance of reading, teachers also will be asked to submit names of books they read during the summer. Periodically, names of participating teachers will be drawn and a prize given to them as well.
Plans for Disseminating Information to Students and Parents
A bulletin board featuring the district poster will be displayed spotlighting the summer reading program.
- A link to the reading program will be put on the school’s website. This link includes highlights of books on the district reading lists.
- A reminder of the summer reading program will be included on report cards issued in June.
- The automated calling system will be used to inform parents of the program initially as well as to remind them of the program during the summer.
